Lots of younger (potential) riders in the UK consider purchasing a motorcycle with a view of saving money on insurance when compared to a car. The fact that you can legally ride a motorcycle at 16 (one year younger) is also a big draw for the younger generation. But, with that said, if you are considering a bike for purely that reason, there are a few things you need to know. Firstly, you need insurance. A bike isn’t a way to cheap cheap insurance. The rules, policies and premiums are pretty much the same when it comes to bike insurance as they are when it comes to car insurance. You must have the minimum cover required to drive legally on the UK roads. That cover being third party i.e. to cover damage to third party vehicles or them personally. You will also often find that purchasing motorcycle insurance and even finding motorcycle insurers willing to cover you at the age will be just as challenging when compared to getting insured on a car. I guess what I am saying is get a bike because you want to ride a bike. Don’t consider it an easier alternative to getting a car.
